David Gilbert explains how his coach Steve Feeney has inspired World Championship success

David Gilbert has credited his coach, Steve Feeney, for the stunning improvement in his career that has led him to a World Championship semi-final.
The 37-year-old first turned professional in 2002 but had never been beyond the second round at the Crucible until this year.
He had also managed just one ranking event final in his career before this season, but now he has been to three after runs to the showpiece contest at the World Open and German Masters.
Gilbert began working with Feeney and his ‘SightRight’ system last year and the improvements are there for all to see.
Feeney has become an influential force in snooker, having worked with world champions Mark Williams, Ronnie O’Sullivan and Stuart Bingham in recent years and Gilbert has also felt the benefits.
‘It’s definitely been my best year by an absolute mile,’ Gilbert told Metro.co.uk. ‘It’s a bit of everything, the end of last year I was a bit fed up with the game. Putting a lot of effort in but playing terrible and the results showed that.

Mark Williams saw his reign as Betfred World Champion ended by a 13-9 defeat against David Gilbert at the second round stage.
Williams, Ronnie O’Sullivan and Mark Selby, the top three ranked players in the world, have all left Sheffield within the first two rounds.
Three-time Crucible king Williams was in the emergency department of the Northern General Hospital until late last night suffering from chest pains and he was clearly off-colour today, both in his demeanour and performance.
But that takes nothing away from former tractor driver Gilbert, who is competing as a seed at the Crucible for the first time and has broken new ground by reaching the last eight. His next opponent is either Barry Hawkins or Kyren Wilson.
A strong run at the Crucible caps off a career-best season for Tamworth’s 37-year-old Gilbert; this term he has reached two ranking event finals as well as climbing into the top 16. One of those finals, at the Yushan World Open, ended in cruel defeat as he let slip a 9-5 lead against Williams, losing 10-9. SIGHTRIGHT COACHED O’SULLIVAN TAKES OVER
No need to look twice – you’re seeing it correctly. After 1,506 days, Mark Selby’s unbroken run at the top of the world rankings is over.
Such has Ronnie O’Sullivan’s dominance been in recent weeks that he now tops the official two year world rankings, the one-year rankings and the Coral Cup standings.
Selby’s run as top dog started at the 2015 German Masters, 49 months ago, but he has now dropped to second place. In the past four months, O’Sullivan has won the Betway UK Championship, Coral Players Championship and Coral Tour Championship, banking £445,000 from those three events to take him to number one. The Rocket is top of the rankings for the fourth time in his career and first since 2010.
He becomes the inaugural winner of the Coral Cup, having earned £280,000 from the three Coral Series events.
O’Sullivan has earned £904,500 this season, his own personal best, and is well placed to become the first player to win over £1 million in a single campaign. He is not playing in next week’s XingPai China Open, but a run to the semi-finals of the Betfred World Championship would earn him £100,000 and take him into seven figures. With a top prize of £500,000 available at the Crucible, he could end the season with over £1,400,000.
Selby would have to win the title in China next week to regain top spot.
Neil Robertson was runner-up at the Coral Tour Championship and his £60,000 moves him one place up the official list to seventh.
The XingPai China Open, which runs from April 1 to 7, is the final event in the Race to the Crucible. The top 16 will then be handed a place at Sheffield’s Theatre of Dreams, while all other players will need to win three matches at the Betfred World Championship qualifiers.
David Gilbert occupies 16th place in the race with £300,000 and a lead of £15,000 over Ryan Day in 17th. Day needs to reach the quarter-finals in Beijing, worth £27,000, to have a chance of leap-frogging Gilbert.
With big money available in China, anyone in the field down to Xiao Guodong in 23rd has a chance of getting into the top 16 by reaching the final and earning £90,000, while anyone down to Dominic Dale in 66th could jump into the elite by winning the £225,000 top prize.

Most snooker players could name one shot in their whole career they would like to replay.
It’s purely hypothetical of course, but if Steve Davis could step into the Tardis he’d go back to 1985 and play that black again. Ken Doherty would love another chance at the black he missed for a 147 in the 2000 Masters final. Stephen Hendry’s pick would also be a black – the one which hit the jaw of the middle pocket instead of dropping, during the 1998 Masters final.
